The March 2014 RecapWhen: March 30, 2014
Where: The Raddison Hotel and Convention Center The INDYpendent show - Comic Book Edition was NOT a giant convention with tons of vendors, costume contests, TV stars, or big studios. Instead, it offered the public a chance to interact with local creators and learn about making comics. This show was designed for the comic creating curious and seekers of unique stories. Looking around the show, almost everyone was engaged in conversation about comic creation or other interests. The atmosphere was completely different than the big conventions with countless people shuffling by tables and barely making eye contact. The INDYpendent Show is a celebration of educational moments, helping young people realize they can create something. Many creators at the show went above and beyond with sharing their experience with attendees. In my case, I was fortunate to witness a moment that I feel best represents our goal for the culture of the show. A young man and his father came to the show because he was interested in creating comics and wanted some ideas where to start. They attended the first two workshops hosted by the INDY Webcomics Group about creating characters and also creating a mini comic. The young man was excited to visit the creator room and ask more questions of the local folks at the show, but as he neared the end of his walk around the room, it had become busy and a little tough to have a conversation. I watched as a local creator took time away from his table to take the young man and his father to the lobby of the hotel and then sit with them to answer his questions. This moment to me was one of the best of the show, to see a local creator wanting to help inspire young talent so much that they would walk away from their chance to sell books, just to make sure that young man would be encouraged to keep creating. In previous years I have often run into situations similar to this from the small press comics community, which is why I've made it my goal to showcase these wonderful folks. I hope you have a chance to experience this at a show in the future. -John Graham |
